Hey there! I'm Dina, a wife, dog mom, a master's student, and the owner of Mary & Martha Cleaning. Over the years I have learned a few things about what a healthy home really means. A clean home is more than just visually appealing. As a professional cleaning lady, I see more than anybody the importance of maintaining your home as another vital way to maintain your health and the health of your family. Similarly, how you and I go to the doctor regularly to get a check-up and make sure everything is working as it should, we should be giving our homes cleaning checkups to make sure it is as healthy as can be for us to live in. Here's how:
Home Check-up

1. Reduce Allergens and Irritants
Dust, pet dander, and pollen can accumulate in your home, triggering allergies and respiratory issues. Regular cleaning—especially vacuuming, dusting, and washing linens—helps reduce these irritants. Clean air is easier to breathe, leading to fewer sneezes and sniffles!
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to clean air filters and vents to ensure the air circulating in your home is fresh and allergen-free.
2. Minimize Germs and Illnesses
Germs thrive in kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-traffic areas. Disinfecting surfaces, doorknobs, and light switches can significantly lower the risk of spreading illnesses like colds, flu, and stomach bugs.
Tip: Some of the other germiest spots in your home are your sponge, cutting board, and remote controls! Regular cleaning and replacing of items like sponges helps keep these bacteria hotspots in check.
3. Improve Mental Health
A cluttered home can lead to a cluttered mind. Studies show that messy, disorganized spaces can increase stress, anxiety, and even depression. Cleaning and organizing your space creates a calming environment, helping you feel more relaxed and focused.
Quick Tip: Start small by tidying one area at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
4. Promote Better Sleep
There’s nothing like climbing into a freshly made bed in a clean bedroom. When your room is tidy and free from dust, it creates a serene space that promotes restful sleep. Plus, maintaining a clean mattress and changing bedding regularly can prevent allergies and skin irritations.
Pro tip: Sheets and bedding that is not only clean but smells good is an added bonus! Before bed, I recommend using your choice of calming aroma in your bedroom. Whether that be essential oils diffusing, a warm soy candle bringing ambiance to your space, or using a eucalyptus or lavender room spray --this little extra step can help a lot!
5. Encourage Healthy Habits
A clean home sets the tone for other healthy habits, like cooking nutritious meals in a spotless kitchen or exercising in a clutter-free living room. It also reduces procrastination, making it easier to tackle other important tasks in your daily life.
6. Prevent Pests!
A clean home is less inviting to pests like ants, cockroaches, and rodents. Regularly wiping down counters, taking out the trash, and storing food properly helps keep unwelcome guests away. You may find this more helpful in the spring and summer months. But keep this is your back pocket because it will make a difference!
